Oceanside Surf Lessons Creates Advanced Surfers

Oceanside surf lessons creates advanced surfers

Oceanside Surf Lessons Creates Advanced Surfers because even beginning techniques are the same as used in advanced surfing. Boards are designed to be ridden a certain way and they all have the same wave catching techniques and require similar popups.

Surfers begin on soft top boards in foam waves. The soft top boards make it easy to catch waves, pop up, and paddle. As surfers develop more strength and stamina, they can enjoy longer sessions, paddle out to real waves, and move to lower volume boards (shorter boards). Some choose to stick with high volume boards even when they buy a hard board. It is the right choice for those who don’t surf often or are not strong.

The pop used by beginners is used by many pros. The surfer paddles, places his hands next to his rib cage, glides for a few seconds, places one foot under his butt flat so he can stand on that foot. As he stands, he lifts his hands off the board and brings the other foot forward. Pros do it faster than beginners, but it often looks the same. The other pop-up type is moving both feet at the same time.

Paddling is an Important Technique

Paddling is a technique used by beginners and advanced surfers. The surfer doesn’t take a long swim stroke nor surf with hand paddling. He wants to take half a swim stroke and drive is arm into the water up to his elbow and pull with the forearm. This is how he gets more power. The surfer takes three strong strokes when the wave is upon him to get into the wave.

Riding the board is similar for beginners and advanced surfers as a first move. The surfer wants to popup with hips and shoulders square to the front. I call it pushing a tall box. The hands are in front and the eyes are facing the beach looking over the nose. Snowboarders and beginners often want to ride like snowboarders with one hand behind. This places the butt over one rail and causes the surfer to fall off.

Beginners soon learn to paddle out and turn around to catch bigger foam waves. Then they start catching small waves and gradually move to bigger real waves. A surfer in good condition that learns well, is coordinated, and has some courage can make this in one lesson, but most take three or four lessons.

Sticking to a high-volume board accelerates learning. Shorter boards are more complex, require more strength, and more precise timing. A surfer starts naturally picking up better judgement of waves when he starts paddling out. Becoming advanced requires frequent trips to the water.
