Short Board Surfing Techniques

learning short board techniques

As beginners advance, they want to learn Short Board Surfing Techniques. The short board is the advance of the soft top board and totally different than the long board.

On the soft top surf board, the surfer has learned to time foam waves and then learns to catch real waves. The surfer learns the pop up with both feet on the surfboard and then on the short board has to learn with his feet extended beyond the tail. On the soft top, the surfer has learned two or three ways to catch real waves and those continue, but the short board needs the arc of the wave more than the soft top.

The surfer’s physical requirements have advanced in that he has to be a stronger paddler due to less volume. He has learned the timing of waves because the board has to be positioned so the wave will come under the board so the surfer can paddle down the face.

Moving From Beginner to Advanced Pop Up

In Oceanside, I teach beginners to pop up with putting the rear foot on the surfboard and then standing on it to place the front foot. On short boards, it is far more efficient to pop both feet at the same time. Total body strength is necessary in upper, core and lower body. Flexibility is important to coil the legs under the body.

The short board surfer bottom turns into the pocket by turning his eyes and then upper torso in the direction of the turn as the turn torques to his feet and then the surfboard. The next maneuver is accelerating for speed to out run the lip and set up for a trick.

Accelerating the Short Board

The surfer accelerates or pumps by moving the nose of the surfboard up and down the wave with his front foot. This can be practiced on the soft top, but the soft top can drive the wave like a long board. After each maneuver, the short board surfer accelerates two or three times to set up the next maneuver.

Two favorite tricks are cut backs and ripping the lip. The cut back is reversing direction. The surfer turns his eyes down the wave and twists to turn the board in the opposite direction of travel. This is done to gain the power of the wave at the lip, for style, and often to stall for a barrel.

Ripping the lip is bottom turning at the bottom of the face and then doing a cut back at the top so the tail sprays the lip. Surfers then advance to doing reverse cut backs, aerials, and 360s. There is a life time of learning in front of the aspiring short boarder.

Most surfers spend their time perfecting these techniques. They learn to catch waves better, accelerate, do cut backs, and practice ripping the lip. Some go on to trying the 360’s, reverse cut backs, and aerials. Advanced surfers watch snowboarders and skateboarders to learn new tricks. There is no limit.

Build Immunity in this Covid Era

The new Omicron variants can often sidestep the anti-bodies in vaccinations. This is when we need to have a strong immunity system. This is when people with underlying conditions like obesity or chronic metabolic disorders like diabetes become vulnerable.

Developing good health habits will help your immune system. The main components would be to attain a healthy weight. Eat healthy. Exercise, Get adequate sleep. Mitigate stress. Drink half your body weight in water oz (a 200-pound person drinks 100 oz.) Consider supplements for the nutrients you may not consume in your daily diet.

One of my favorites is the Rishi mushroom. It has been chronicled in Chinese medicine for thousands of years. It supports the major systems. It fights viruses, bacteria, allergies, and inflammation. I get a compilation of 5 reishi mushrooms extracted and combined into one powder. You can get a discount as my client with this link.

This is a short statement that says it all:
