Adults Take Surf Lessons with Kids and everyone has fun together. The great thing about surf lessons is everyone is together and no one gets left behind like skiing on a mountain. Lessons in Oceanside are in waist deep water where swimming is not even necessary.

Adults and kids might learn differently and each can be tended to in their own way. Recently, I had two moms and two 7 year old girls. The moms were taught a little farther out in foam waves and the little girls were pushed into waves closer to shore. Everyone had fun.

Adults have to learn the technical skills because their weight has to be properly placed on the surfboard for balance. Kids have lighter weight compared to the volume of soft tops and they get a lot more leeway with accuracy of pop ups and riding.

The Fundamentals of Surf Learning for Adults and Kids

Lessons begin with a dry land session. Students learn safety and technique. Adults are taught the proper pop up for beginners and practice on the beach. Kids generally can’t follow the technicalities are instructed to paddle and stand up. They are shown how to wind up in the proper stance for balance.

Everyone goes through the same hesitancy when facing waves for the first time on a surfboard. Adults usually have some fear of standing up. They want to hold on until they get both feet on the board and feel safe standing up. This causes more problems than it solves. The key is to stand upright quicker releasing the hands from the board before the front foot is placed near the nose. Holding on puts the head in front of the front foot and causes the surfer to fly off the front of the board.

New students learn the beginner pop up. This pop up is also used by pros, but they move through the steps quicker and it almost looks as if they are popping both feet at the same time. The beginner paddles, then puts his hands next to his chest in a man’s push up position. Then he pushes and brings one foot under his butt and places it flat so he can stand on it.

Flexibility becomes an issue here for many adults because they can’t get their foot flat on the board. They are too tight in the hamstrings, buttocks, and lower back. After the back foot is placed flat, the surfer stands up lifting his hands and torso to an upright position as the other foot is moved toward the nose of the board. Either foot in front is alright. Most people are regular footed meaning the left foot is in front.

Kids are pushed into waves. I tell them to paddle and then I yell stand up. It is up to them to figure it out and most can get into a riding position. They are loose and have good balance from all their play time in different activities. They soon become very comfortable when they realize they don’t get hurt. It is a wonderful experience for kids and a great introduction to the ocean.
