Mastering the Beginner Surfer Pop Up and the Advanced Pop Up

The beginner and advanced pop up

Beginner surfers can progress from Mastering a Beginner Surfer Pop Up to the Advanced Surfer Pop Up. The beginner pop up is easier because it utilizes muscles already developed and the advanced pop up requires some training.

The beginner and advanced pop up work best with a count spoken out loud during the process. They are very similar to a certain point. The beginner pop up is great for catching foam waves and the advanced pop up is better for catching real waves.

Rhythm and Timing are Key for Catching Waves and Popping Up

Both require learning timing and rhythm. The surfer spots the wave he will ride, gets in position, paddles to catch it, pops up, and then rides it. The beginner pop up starts with rolling over on the surfboard in waist deep water when the foam wave is 20′ away and paddling three easy strokes. The surfer looks to the side to see when the wave will hit the board and then paddles three hard strokes to accelerate in front of the wave.

Once the beginner has caught the wave, he puts his hands in a man’s push up position and rests for a few seconds. Then he pushes up and places one foot flat on the board under his butt so he can stand on that foot. He rises and is on one foot for a few seconds as he lifts his hands off the board and moves the other foot to the front of the board. He should be in a “push the box” stance with both hands in front and legs shoulder width apart. Knees are flexed.

Moving to the Advanced Pop Up

In the advanced pop up, the surfer goes through the same motions until he places his hands on the board. Then when he pushes, he brings both feet under his body placing one foot in front of his body and the other resting under his body. He winds up in the same “pushing the box” stance as in the beginner pop up. The front foot is going under his chest to reach a spot in the middle of the board and at a 45 degree angle forward.

In foam waves, the surfer has plenty of time to execute each move without being rushed or panicked. On real waves the surfer will feel the need to move faster. The advanced pop up can be practiced in foam waves to get the feel and master it. Then the surfer can look for small real waves and gradually work his way up to bigger waves. It takes time to build the timing, coordination, and courage to move up to real waves.
