People that are overweight have disadvantages in learning to surf but there is a process for How Overweight People Learn to Surf. The first issues deal with what happened while the person was gaining weight and perhaps leading a sedentary life.

Surfing requires a power to weight ratio which says you must have the power to lift your weight off the board. The surfer needs upper body strength to lift his chest and then lower body leg strength to stand up on one foot for a few seconds as he moves his front foot to the nose of the board. The best exercise is push ups. A beginner should work to get to 30 push ups a day and keep doing them. They will build upper body and core strength.

Flexibility is an Issue for Most Beginner Surfers

The issue that intervenes is flexibility. The surfer must have the flexibility to get a foot under his butt to stand on. Sedentary people have not been stretching, but rather allowing muscles to tighten from too much sitting. The surfer needs flexibility in the hamstrings, buttocks, and lower back. The best exercises are squats and dead lifts without weights. They stretch the backside. They should be done each day and I recommend up to 60 squats each morning.

A third necessity is stamina. A sedentary person could start by walking and work up to an hour a day. Running would be helpful or biking, swimming, treadmills, or hiking. They all start developing the cardiovascular system. We want to accelerate breathing to build capability.

Losing Weight While Getting Stronger

Losing weight while getting stronger is the right path. There are lots of diets. Learning to eat healthy food instead of sugars, white flour, and alcohol is a start. One should check their weight status against the Body Mass Index used by all personal trainers and doctors. It classifies as Normal, Overweight, Obese, and Morbidly Obese. The idea is to get in the normal weight range. It calculates as a ratio between height and weight. See it at Body Mass Index.

The overweight surfer should move slowly and deliberately to improve status. Consistency and persistence are the keys. You can develop a new lifestyle with added capabilities by following a discipline. Surfing capabilities will keep improving as all the above issues are improved.
