Can Everyone in a Family Surf

I am often asked Can Everyone in a Family Surf? There are two considerations. In my lessons, I will include as young as 5 years old and I have taught seniors up to 77. I have had three generations in one lesson. Moms are often concerned saying I have birthed three kids and am concerned about my conditioning.

I have lots of families with five or more kids. The moms all do great. It is not as relevant how many children have been birthed as it is how active moms are. Seems moms have to be very active chasing kids, picking things up, and cleaning all the time. Sometimes dads are more of a concern. I have seen especially since the pandemic that everyone has been locked down and put on weight and not exercising.

The Fun of Family Surf Lessons

One of the great thing about beginner surfer families is that everyone is in the same spot. No one gets left behind. Because beginner surf lessons occur in shallow water, everyone can stand up or move closer to shore to catch waves if they are small. Those who have lots of energy, like teens, will keep on surfing while those with less energy, like parents, can stand and rest awhile.

The little kids learn to move closer to the beach to catch the smaller foam waves and can entertain themselves. They are usually tireless. Teens start moving out for bigger waves. Dads seem to be brave and after they get the idea, they are also moving out further to catch bigger waves.

Lessons begin with a dryland portion to learn the fundamentals. Then students get pushed for a few waves to learn to stand up. Then they are taught to catch their own waves. Soon, they are turned loose to select the waves they ride and see if they have learned. This is the part everyone loves whether or not they are successfully riding to the beach.

Surfing is more technical than anyone imagines. Some learn fast and others slowly. By the end of lessons, most people have learned to ride waves. It is a sport families can plan vacations around and go to any beach resort in many countries. Surfing is something kids will have all their lives. It is great exercise and very rewarding. People love the independence of moving at their own pace and conquering something quite challenging.
