Surf Lessons Create Surfers

Surf lessons create surfers because new students learn much more than getting on a surf board. New students in Oceanside Surf Lessons learn comfort in the ocean and how to hand their surf board when waves are big.

surf lessons create surfers

In recent weeks, the surf has been big and rough in Oceanside. Teaching new students to ride a surfboard when they are focusing on the conditions more than techniques requires focus and courage.

Beginning Surf Lessons

The dry land lesson demonstrates the techniques for the beginner pop up that has to be executed after catching a foam wave. Students get a count they memorize and say out loud in the process of popping up. The point is to slow down their racing mind and create a rhythm in a step by step process.

Students that can calm their minds, count out loud, and execute the process are up on the first ride. It has little to do with previous athletic abilities, but on the ability to focus right now. I am often amazed by who masters it and who doesn’t.

The Ocean Can Be Intimdating

New students in surf lessons focused on the intimidation of the wave will abandon the step by step process and make something up. This never works. Surfing begins with mastering the fundamentals. Progressing in surfing is about facing fears to attempt bigger waves or new techniques. Even pros say they were scared when first progressing through bigger waves.

Mastering techniques and feeling comfortable in the ocean are life changing events. New students who accomplish this have a new feeling about themselves and an immediate connection with the Ocean and therefore Mother Nature. It is this connection that draws surfers to the water even on days when the waves are not great.
