Seniors Take Surfing Lessons

Seniors take surfing lessons and usually perform well. Age is functional more than chronological. The secret to longevity and a quality life is keep moving. Those who do aerobics, stretch, and maintain some body strength are good surf candidates.

Surf lessons begin in shallow water so there is little threat of big waves or drowning. The water is only waist deep. Some seniors may decide that riding foam waves on big boards is all the exercise they need. I see seniors doing this all the time.

What Seniors Learn

Lessons begin with the instructor pushing students into waves. After the student demonstrates some understanding of the dry land lesson, they start catching their own waves. This is all they need to learn to practice.

The process begins with learning to balance on the surf board while paddling. Then students learn to time the wave. Then a sequence is followed to go from lying down to standing up. If the surfer is standing with the right posture, the ride to the beach is easy.

Selecting the Right Surf Board

Most seniors will want a big surf board. I start them on 9′ soft top boards which is a good size to continue. If a senior wants to buy a surf board, they can buy a 9′ or 9’6″ hard board. This allows easy paddling and easy wave catching. It also has a lot of volume to make pop ups and riding easier.

Fun is the purpose. Learning the skills, getting in shape and practicing often will make the sport a great recreation and great conditioner. Not to mention the joy of being outdoors and connecting with the ocean. There is also membership automatically in the global culture of surfers.
