What Do Oceanside Surf Lessons Teach?
Many new prospects ask What Do Oceanside Surf Lessons Teach. Learning to surf opens a whole world of new opportunities and often people learn a lot about themselves they didn’t know. It is a quick assessment of physical conditioning, learning ability, and courage. There are not a lot of opportunities to measure each of these areas in every day life.
Physical conditioning is reflected in a beginners ability to progress and to handle the often intimidating power of the ocean. When people are weak, timid, or fearful, they often have a difficult time dealing with even the relatively mild power of the foam wave. Many people are afraid of standing up on the surfboard once it is moving. Pointing this out is often enough to get them over the barrier.
Finding Comfort in the Ocean is a Big Step for Most
Learning to feel comfort in the ocean is an important step. Most people admit to being fearful or nervous. A few rides starts breaking down this fear when they realize they can’t drown in waist deep water and that the waves won’t hurt them. If they can learn the pop up sequence and ride the board they often find they are hooked for life. Strangely, many who can’t stand up still have a great time catching waves.
Surfing requires upper body and lower body strength. The upper body pushes the body off the board and the lower body helps the surfer lift off the board on one foot as he raises his hands to move the second foot to the front of the board. Insufficient strength makes this task difficult. This difficulty is often the result of too much body weight. Being overweight often coincides with the lack of power to lift that weight.
Flexibility Is Necessary and Often a Surprise
Flexibility is necessary and an eye opener to many new students. They find that even yoga and their minor stretching is not enough. Hamstrings, buttocks, and lower back must all be stretched to perform the surfing pop up. The best exercises are squats, touching the palms to the floor, and crossing hands over the body from right to left to touch the floor.
Losing weight and building strength is a process for most surfers. The pros want to be light so the board doesn’t sink and makes it easier to paddle. Lean makes agility and balance more feasible. Lean improves oxygen uptake so the surfer can surf hard for longer. Soccer players who run for miles in a game and are lean find they have great stamina for surfing.
Surfing unveils a whole new world of physicality and great fun for those who can make the grade. Many people say they are addicted after the first time. How great to find another passion in life that is healthy and fun.
