Beginner Surfers Get Fit to Surf
Surfing is the most demanding physical sport most people will because it has an entry level of fitness necessary. Beginner Surfers Get Fit to Surf with some good practices.
Surfing requires strength, flexibility, and aerobic fitness. Exercises for surfing can be surf specific but they would help any recreational endeavor. First the surfer needs upper body strength for the pop up. The most effective single exercise is pushups. 3 sets of 20 is a good goal.
Next surfing needs flexibility, which most people lack. Sitting tightens up muscles in the hamstrings, buttocks, and lower back. The best exercises for strength and flexibility in these muscles is squats and dead lifts. They can be performed without weights. 25 of each in the morning is a good start. Add weights for further benefits but be sure you have perfect form or you can injure your lower back.
Aerobic fitness is important because paddling is the tiring part of surfing and that which ends sessions first. Nothing builds like paddling, but any aerobic exercise that builds cardio is good. Even start walking and build to an hour a day. Bike riding, swimming, treadmills, and hiking all improve circulation, start the muscles adding more receptors for glucose, and build the respiratory system.
Being overweight is a factor that affects surfing. There is a power to weight ratio that demands a person is strong enough to lift their body off the surfboard. Gaining weight and not exercising hurts this ratio. Losing weight and doing the above exercises improves this ratio.
Beginner surfers find out the first day how the demands correlate to their conditioning. As an instructor, I hear people who are triathletes and runners say they have to get in better shape. Surfing is muscle specific but it is also over all conditioning because it is a full body sport. My books The 3 Week Plan or Get Fit to Surf can get anyone into surf shape and conditioned for all the recreational opportunities they want to enjoy.
