How to Get Physically Ready for Surfing

Many people who have been sedentary need to learn How to Get Physically Ready for Surfing. Surfing is one of the most full body sports that requires strength, stamina, and flexibility. Sedentary people lack each of these requirements and may also lack the necessary brain to body communication necessary (coordination).

It is great surfing is on so many bucket lists. It is a great recreation for beach travel. It is great exercise for both fun and conditioning. It is more technical than people expect and more tiring than people expect. Tiring comes quickly from the amount of paddling involved. You might ask, how long can I swim?

One of the main physical requirements for the pop up is flexibility. It is easy to lose flexibility from lots of sitting. Even physical exercise like running can make the body tight. The pop up needs flexibility from the hamstrings, buttocks and lower back. The best exercises are squats and dead lifts. They can be done without weights. 25 a day strengthens and loosens the necessary pop up muscles.

Upper Body Strength is Important

Upper body strength is important. It is especially important for overweight people. There is a power to weight ratio that asks if the surfer is strong enough to lift their weight off the surfboard. In the pop up the surfer lifts their upper body in a push up to get a foot under their butt to stand on. This requires upper and lower body strength to execute and weight can be a big hindrance. Being overweightf is usually an indication the necessary muscles have not been utilized.

Stamina is necessary for exertion and recovery. For each wave the surfer paddles to catch the wave and then walks back out to catch another one. After 20 rides, the surfer can feel the exertion of the paddling and the walking back through the waves. Falling off is also tiring. Aerobic stamina can prepare the muscles by absorbing glucose for exertion and recovery. Nothing builds surfing stamina like paddling, but cross training is a part of professional regimens.

If you know you want to learn to surf or are going on a vacation where you will take surf lessons, it is never too early to start training your body.
