The Surfer Advanced Pop Up
The surfer advanced pop up is often more difficult than the beginner pop up I use in surf lessons because it requires more upper body strength. The advantage is its a quicker process to standing up.
Counting through the pop up process
In all pop ups, I have new students use a count that they repeat in the water as they go through the pop up process. The reason is new students are thinking about the waves and not the process and hurry into a mess of a pop up.
The count for the beginner surfer pop up is paddle, stop (with hands on board in man’s push up position), push (up), back foot on board (under butt and flat so you can stand up on it), raise hands, front foot (raise hands and drive front foot to nose of board).
The Key for All Pop Ups
The key to any pop up is to have the hands in the air and the body in an upright position before the feet are landed on the board or as they have landed. If the hands are still on the board or the head is leaning forward over the toes, the surfer flies off the nose of the board.
In the advanced surfer pop up, the moves are quicker. The surfer paddles, puts his hands on the board, and pushes up. The difference is the push has to be so strong the body is lifted slightly off the surf board. At this instant both feet move under the body with the front foot planted near the nose and the rear foot is shoulder width apart at the back.
The key posture is the front foot is across the middle of the board. The hips and shoulders are squared to the front. Weight is equal on the front and back leg. The hands are in front of the body.
Difficulties for Beginners with the Pop Ups
The difficulties most beginners have are two. When they pop up, one shoulder is back and one front. This puts the butt over one rail instead of over the middle stringer. The surfer falls off the butt side of the board.
The second difficulty is new students want to keep their hands on the board until their feet have landed. This puts their head in front of their toes and off the front of the board they fly.
In the advanced surfer pop up, both feet hit at the same time, the torso is upright, the hips and shoulders are squared to the front, the hands are in the air and in front of the body.
