Seniors Surf Long Boards

Seniors surf long boards because it makes surfing easier and for many feasible. The long board starts at 9′ and has the volume to make paddling easier, catching waves easier, and riding easier.

Seniors can learn on a 9′ surf board and then even move to a 9’6″ or 10′ surf board. It is good not to get too big because then techniques can get sloppy. I have had surfers on high volume boards step down a little and realize improved performance and technique.

Senior Conditioning for Surfing

The biggest difficulty at any age is being overweight. Even kids that are overweight have a difficult time learning to surf. The second important physical necessity is flexibility. The pop up technique requires flexibility in the hamstrings, buttocks, and lower back.

A final difficulty for seniors might by the loss of upper body and core strength. The pop up requires the surfer to push up and bring his feet under his body. Push ups and dead lifts are probably the two best exercises to build the upper body and strengthen the core as well loosen the lower back.

Seniors can have difficulty with stamina which allows them to practice longer. Cross training with biking, treadmills, rowing, jogging, or aerobic classes help both stamina and recovery.

The Long Board is Fun

Most of the young kids and teenagers aspire to ride the short board they see in the movies or at the beach. It can take years to develop competence on the short board. The long board is very forgiving, great for week end warriors, and allows surfers to catch more waves because paddling is not as tiring.

The 9′ soft top is a great beginner long board. It can be ridden in foam waves until the surfer is ready for real waves. From there, the surfer may decide to step to a more high performing 8′ soft top board or go longer to a hard board. There are many options depending on how well the surfer progresses.
