Surfing From Beginner to Advanced
Surfing from beginner to advanced is a long process in which the surfer has to be patient and be willing to learn techniques. The beginner process should start with a soft top board in foam waves with a good instructor. Afterward, techniques can be learned on ones own.
The Beginning
The first lesson is the most daunting. Surfers learn to balance the board while paddling and keeping it straight to catch a wave. This is about paddling and timing. It is not as easy as one would think. Paddling and timing are important through all stages.
The surfer then learns how to pop up on the board. Advanced surfers pop up with both feet at once into a balanced posture. I teach beginners to put a back foot on the board first and stand while putting the front foot on the board.
The right posture for beginners is important. The hips and shoulders have to be squared to the front with the hands in front and weight equal on both legs. Most beginners ride the board like a skate or snow board with one hand trailing. This causes them to fall off on the butt side of the board.
The Intermediate
The intermediate is paddling out through the waves and turning around to catch foam waves and then learning to catch real waves. The intermediate can learn to bottom turn into the pocket and drive the pocket. He can also learn some techniques like accelerating in the pocket and cut backs.
The intermediate starts catching bigger waves and uses his skills and courage to ride up to 5′ waves. He is adept at working in the line up following etiquette and catching waves and riding them adding some maneuvers.
The Advanced Surfer
The advanced surfer has learned all the maneuvers and is riding a hard board. He starts catching bigger waves and can perform all the maneuvers and is working on tricks. The advanced surfer becomes an excellent wave catcher and understands the timing and difficulties of different types of waves.
In the journey the surfer is gaining stamina, building strength, and improving comfort in the ocean. Making progress requires frequent visits to the water and many surfers will include cross training to build the strength and stamina. Over this period of time, the surfer gains a tremendous connection with the ocean and Mother Nature.
