Families Take Surf Lessons

Families take surf lessons together and can all be in the same place without worrying about someone lagging behind. It is often the youngest that are best. They have flexible bodies and are very agile through their play.

Lessons start with a dry land portion where the basic techniques are explained and everyone practices the pop up. Then everyone enters the water and begins the lesson with being pushed into waves. Soon everyone is released to catch their own waves and that’s where the real fun begins.

Basic Techniques

The basic techniques are rolling over on the board properly ready to paddle. Then students catch waves. Then they pop up and ride to the beach. Timing is important for each. The catching wave and pop up should look as smooth as it does in the movies.

The pop up is a sequence of moves. I give students a count to take them through the process without thinking. The count is paddle, stop, push, back foot, stand up and front foot. At the end of the process they are in the proper posture to ride the board.

If students don’t get into the proper posture on the board, they fall off. The board is designed so that weight will be equal on both sides of the stringer that runs down the middle of the board. The front foot is near the nose and the rear foot is shoulder width apart and behind. The hips and shoulder have to be square to the front with the hands out in front.

After students learn the basics of catching waves and popping up, they can start paddling out through the foam waves to turn around and catch the next one. This is fun and prepares students to paddle out for bigger waves and eventually real waves.

There is no reason families can’t always surf together and vacations can be planned to fun spots with surfing as a theme. Who doesn’t want to visit more beaches?
