Seniors and Overweight People Get Fit to Surf
Seniors and Overweight People Get Fit to surf because it is an activity that mostly sedentary people have to gear up to engage successfully. The two states of begin overweight and being a senior often have a lack of comprehensive physical activity in common.
Walking, running and biking riding are excellent fitness routines that improve cardiovascular capability. Add strength training and flexibility routines and the exerciser is approaching surfing fitness. Strength training can begin with pushups. The most useful exercise for surf training. Surfing also requires flexibility which even exercisers lose because they rarely stretch their hamstrings, buttocks and lower back. Yoga is an obvious choice here.
Building Strength and Flexibility is Paramount for Surfing
The number one exercise I recommend for surfing flexibility is squats. They can be done each day without weight. Dead lifts are another form of stretching the muscles of the lower back and buttocks while adding strength to the lower body. The pop up for surfing requires using the legs to lift the body off the surfboard. The legs must be strong enough to lift one’s weight.
Losing weight usually improves everyone’s surfing capability. It makes less weight to lift off the board, improves oxygen uptake for stamina, and makes one more agile. If someone has a big belly, it makes it very difficult to balance on the board. It is like putting a volley ball between your body and the surfboard. Big legs make it difficult to put one foot flat under your butt for the pop up. Excess Weight and lack of flexibility inhibit the ability to stand on the board.
Determining Your Weight Status in Medical Terms
The medical and health fields measure a persons appropriate weight with the Body Mass Index. It is a balance of height and weight. Weight is categorized as underweight, normal, overweight, obese, and extremely obese. There is an easy chart to determine your status. https://www.nhlbi.nih.gov/health/educational/lose_wt/BMI/bmicalc.htm. Fill in your height and weight and it will show your weight category.
As we age, our balance can suffer. Those who are active bike riders, do yoga practices, skiers, and other sports requiring balance maintain good balance for recreation. Learning to surf is mostly technique, but there is a minimum of balance and agility required. Walking straight on a beam or curb might be a good indication of your balance.
Getting Fit to Surf can have wonderful affects on your quality of life. Why not engage in a number of fun activities that keep you fit.
