Obese People Can Train to Surf. Since the pandemic, I see more obese people taking surf lessons. There are a lot of reasons, no doubt. The problem with putting on weight is that it is usually accompanied by not exercising. A terrible combination.
Most obese people would not consider themselves obese. Many are not aware of their size. I had a student who weighed 220 pounds say that when he looked in the mirror recently at his 380 pound body, he did not see a fat person. A good way to find your size is calculating Body Mass as used by the medical and health care professions. See calculator. Just fill in your height and weight in chart.
The Basics of Obese People Training to Surf
The combination of losing weight and getting stronger is the key. Both can be done at the same time. If you have not exercised in a while, be sure to check with your doctor to know its safe. Heart attacks and strokes can be induced by too much exertion. Start slow and build up.
The body acclimates to both a level of exercise and a calorie reduction in your diet. exercise has to be increased to get more calories burned. A diet has to get leaner to cause a deficit in calories without slowing down the metabolism. Starving causes a commensurate slow down in metabolism and it isn’t safe. The best way to begin calorie reduction is to eliminate all the bad foods. Eliminate sugars, bad fats, and flour. This is a great start.
The best way to begin exercise is work on strength, flexibility, and cardiovascular. All three are important for surfing and take time to develop. Begin strength training first with floor exercises like squats, deadlifts, and lunges to build balance and form. A personal trainer or YouTube videos could demonstrate proper form. These exercises will also develop flexibility. Push ups, planks, and burpies would be an eventual goal.
Aerobics can begin with walking 10 minutes a day and building to 30 minutes, and then an hour 5 days a week. That is 150 minutes of aerobics a week. Try to build to 300 minutes or an hour a day five days a week. Other exercises like swimming, biking, or treadmills are also good.
Create a whole new program of exercise and nutrition while learning the surfing fundamentals. You can learn all this in my book Every Body Can Surf.
