How Beginner Surfers Get Fit
Surfing is physically demanding, and beginners get tired. Beginner surfers get fit with whole body exercise routines. Surfers need strength, flexibility, and stamina.
The paddling is the most tiring and when surfers can’t paddle, their session is over. Paddling also creates a subtle fatigue that pervades the whole body so at a point, there is no energy. The best “tell” is when a surfer starts flubbing their pop ups, they take an inventory of how tired they are.
The pop up requires upper body strength, core strength, and leg strength. It is also easier if a surfer is normal weight. Lifting the body off the board smoothy takes athleticism which is made easier by being leaner. The best exercises for popups are pushups and squats. These exercise the basic surfer muscles.
Flexibility Needs Effort Every Day
Flexibility is needed to get the feet under the body in the popup. The surfer paddles, puts his hands on the board, pushes up, and then brings one foot under his butt and places it flat on the board so he can stand on it. To get it flat, the surfer needs flexibility that most people don’t have. The best flexibility exercises are placing the hands flat on the floor, bending over and grabbing behind the ankles and pulling the head down, and squats. I do these three every morning.
Stamina is needed to make sessions longer. Most surfers are very tired at 2 hours and the prime duration for most beginners is 1.5 hours. To increase session times, the surfer needs to build glucose stores in the muscles and cardiovascular endurance. Glucose is the fuel for muscles and the storage has to be increased with muscle building exercises. Surfing will increase glucose storage and so will weight work. Aerobics are the best exercises for cardiovascular development.
Losing Weight is Often a Surfer Goal
Losing weight helps most surfers. The pros want to be light so they have less weight on the board making it easier to paddle. Lean also helps agility. Pros don’t want bulky muscles which add weight, they want lean muscle and no fat on their bodies.
Do everything together. Surfing will improve and so will self-esteem as your body transforms into an athletic machine.
