Can You Surf the First Time You Visit the Ocean

Many people make reservations to surf the first time they visit the ocean and Oceanside. The fact a person has not visited the ocean is not a problem in learning techniques, but would be a problem if a person is intimidated by waves.

Teens and adults are rarely intimidated by waves to the point they can’t function but everyone carries a little fear into the water. Even those familiar with the ocean have a little fear when it comes to standing up on the surf board even though they performed the preliminary techniques correctly.

Overcoming Fear in the First Visit to the Ocean to Surf

Kids often have the most fear when visiting the ocean the first time. Some do and some don’t. I recommend to parents to get kids in the water on a boogie board so they get used to waves and perhaps going under water from waves crashing on them.

When you put a child on a surfboard that isn’t comfortable in waves and point them to the beach with the wave coming from behind where they can’t see it, anxieties rise to the surface.

The greatest improvement I love to see is people becoming comfortable in the ocean. It really starts to show when after the preliminaries of people catching foam waves and riding to the beach, they begin to paddle out through waves and then selecting the wave they want to ride. This is where people blossom and really fall in love with surfing.

The physical demands of surfing complement people who are physically active and aerobically fit. Flexibility is crucial and experience shows that people over weight have less flexibility and strength to lift their weight off the surfboard.

The exercises I recommend for people wanting to get in condition for surfing or wanting to get into condition after surfing and seeing the need are just a few. I like burpies, push ups, squats, and dead lifts. These create strength, core, and flexibility. Then a good aerobic program creates the ability to recover from the interval like activity of paddling to catch waves.

The more fit a beginner is, the more confident they are in their ability to execute the techniques. The more physical activities the person is involved in, the easier it is to learn something new.
