Why Are Obese People Surfing

One wonders why obese people are surfing. I really mean why are they taking surf lessons? If they were to continue it would be life changing for their life style. With the pandemic there are few inside activities available other than staying locked down.

People that are over weight to the clinical definition of obesity which is a measurement of height divided by weight in metrics, have probably had few exercise routines. I can presume they don’t go on walks, run, bike, go to the gym, do yoga, stretch, use a treadmill, or monitor their nutrition.

How to Change Your Life Style with Surfing

When people sign up for surf lessons, I always ask for height and weight so that I can match them to a surf board. What amazes me this year out of the last 11 years is how many people are obese. I think a lot of it must be pandemic related. I think it is good to call it for what it is because so many live in denial.

As a Certified Health Coach, I know that making changes is difficult. One of the biggest issues for health coaches and personal trainers is getting people starting new routines to stay committed for even a year. The problems underlying obesity are often emotional or boredom. It might also be financial in that bad calories are cheaper.

The great thing about surfing is everyone that has tried it says it is fun even if they could not stand up on the surf board. Wow! Imagine over weight people finding exercise fun! Now they just have to overcome the obstacles to being successful, which is standing up and riding to the beach.

This requires a new routine. If I was a surfing health coach, I would design the necessary steps to becoming a successful surfer for people who are currently obese. (One can Google obesity for Body Mass Index to learn where you stand)

What Are the Steps for Obese People to Become Surfers

The four necessities are weight, strength, flexibility, and stamina. They can all be worked on at once. This would be the perfect objective of a personal trainer getting a new client. The trainer starts slow. One doesn’t want to make dramatic sacrifices because they will not last. Most people don’t lose 10 pounds in a month because the routine is too severe.

Building health should be a steady routine, not fast. I lost 50 pounds once over 4 years and the eating habits became my new life style. In the process, I was so encouraged I started exercising more vigorously and I have always been an exerciser.

The best organization for nutrition control does not talk about diet right away. They talk about awareness. Do you only eat when you are hungry? Do you only eat foods you like? Do you know when you are full? These three guidelines can make a big difference in awareness before you start changing your eating habits.

One of the main problems of not building muscle is all the excess carbohydrates go to fat. Muscle can be built with a lot of exercise routines. Weights are very efficient and start with the biggest muscles like doing squats, dead lifts, and push ups. These are also the three best exercises for surfing flexibility. (Form in these exercises is crucial to avoid injury. Start without weights. Consult a doctor to see if you are fit to exercise.)

Doing pop ups on the surf board are a function of power to weight. Do you have enough strength to get your body off the surf board. Most obese people do not. So, obviously, losing weight and building strength is key.

Stamina is important for everyone in surfing including surfers. When they don’t surf for a few weeks, they notice their loss of paddling stamina. Paddling is very tiring. It is improved with frequent trips to the water and weight training. Professional surfers might spend an hour and a half in the water and many hours cross training with dry land work outs.

The great thing about working out at your own pace and not being drastic is that any progress is encouraging. Progress is the engine of more progress. As you make progress, you start seeing the possibilities.

I once was giving a lesson to a male student who weighed 220 pounds. When asked how to improve I mentioned losing weight. He said, I just lost 160 pounds. Wow! He said when I looked in the mirror, I never saw a fat person. When I wanted to start doing things, I realized I needed to lose weight. Now, 160 pounds lighter, he decided to take surf lessons.

Sometimes people need a good goal. Feeling good, raising self-esteem, being healthy, having more respect, living longer, and of course, opening the opportunities to do more things should all be fun objectives.
