They have natural ability, learn well, and have good coordination between the brain and the body. Most students are much better the second day. They are more fresh and the lessons have started to sink in. They may have time between lessons to work on what their body needs. They may have time to practice pop ups in their living room to get the flow.

Getting Comfortable in the Ocean

Students become more comfortable in the ocean after the first lesson. They learn to paddle out and turn around to catch bigger foam waves and may start on seeking small real waves. They start to learn how to spot the right waves to ride and which waves to let pass. Their body is learning the timing of catching waves and executing the pop up. Their racing brain has slowed and they can focus on the steps.

By the third lesson, they can start exploring their potential. Some students are ready to ride real waves. Some still need the practice of catching and popping up on waves and riding to the beach. After the third lesson, students should be able to have good practices on their own. It is regressive to have bad practices with bad habits. All habits become muscle memory and bad practices are hard to reverse. Students who have tried to learn on their own often have to spend the first lesson reversing bad practices.

No one knows whether they will be good at surfing before they start. Sometimes athletes good in some sports can’t get the hang of surfing. Sometimes people who learn well and have good coordination find they are excellent surfers. Excelling stimulates the desire to surf more and many say they are addicted right away. A surfer certainly knows where surfing will rate in their lives after three lessons.
