Why Surfers Are Fit
People that begin surfing know after the first lesson Why Surfers Are Fit. It is a lot of work and probably harder exercise than beginners have ever experienced. It is full body. Surfers who enter the water frequently change their lifestyle.
Surfers know how much work surfing requires. It demands upper body strength, core strength, leg strength, and stamina. It favors the lean body. Oxygen up take is better when you are lean and less weight means the short board doesn’t sink as much. The more it floats, the easier it is to paddle.
Cross Training Becomes Important
Professional surfers spend as much time cross training out of the water as surfing. They know the demands and that they get better by being more fit. They know in a competition, they may need lots of reserves by the time they reach a final round. Plus on big wave days, it is tiring.
The amateur surfer knows that being better fit allows longer surfing sessions. When you are tired paddling, your day is over. This requires good nutrition, good sleep, days off, and then days of pushing the limits. Surfers get stronger from more frequent visits to the water. Surfers lose their timing and stamina when there is too long of a break between sessions. This requires some time management and surfing as a priority.
Making Surfing a Priority
When surfing becomes a priority, everything else can change. It is like a key habit that changes everything. There becomes a merger of what you do to who you are. You become a surfer. You do what it takes to become a better surfer. You eat healthy, you exercise, you try to learn more, you practice the techniques to advance, you work on courage to ride bigger waves and on bad days.
Being lean is only one aspect of being a surfer. It is a culture of people who are connected to the ocean and the fun of harnessing the energy of Mother Nature for their own pleasure and thrills. There are no limits so it can be a test of who you are or how far you can go.
