Adults Get Fit to Surf so they can enjoy a great recreation and get lots of exercise. Surfing is physically demanding and fun, but basic surf fitness is necessary to enjoy that fun. Adults don’t have to aim at riding big waves, they can enjoy riding foam waves to the beach.

Adults that exercise have an easier time taking their fitness to the water. What most people lack is flexibility for surfing. The pop up requires putting one foot on the board under the surfer’s butt so he can stand, release his hands from the board and move the other foot to the front of the board. If the surfer cannot put the foot flat under his butt, he can’t stand in the proper stance.

Practice the Pop Up in Your Living Room

You can try this in your living room. Lay on the floor. Put your hands in a man’s push up position next to your rib cage. Push up. Move one foot forward about 3′ feet so it is under your butt and flat on the board. I twist mine to the side to make it easier. Stand on that foot as you raise your hands and bring the other foot forward in front of your head. That’s your well executed pop up.

Upper body strength is also helpful. There is the power to weigh ratio which asks if you have the strength to lift your upper body off the board in the push up. Being overweight is a hindrance. It probably means you have not been exercising. It might mean you cannot lift your upper body to get your foot under your butt. It might also mean you don’t have the strength in your legs to lift your weight on one foot for that few seconds to move the other foot forward.

Get Flexible

The best exercises for flexibility and surfer strength are pushups, squats, and dead lifts. The latter two can be done without weights. I do 30 squats and dead lifts every morning and 40 pushups every other day. I do an advanced pop up where I move both feet at the same time. These exercises give me a great pop up. Get Cardio Fit

The next fitness move is cardio fitness. Surfing is tiring. Everyone says so. Riding the board is not tiring, it’s the paddling. When you are tired of paddling, your session is over. Paddling stamina is cardio fitness gained from any aerobics. Paddling strength is once again upper body gained with pushups, cables, weights, and paddling. The muscles absorb glucose for fuel. The more glucose they hold, the more stamina has the athlete. It takes time to train the muscles to absorb more glucose and that time is spend building and training muscle.
