Seniors Can Surf

I get a lot of questions about surfing and one answer is Seniors Can Surf. They perform well on the first day as a function for how active they are exercising. The walking and biking help with stamina to get through an hour lesson. Other necessities need more specific attention.

People at any age that spend a lot of time sitting like students working from home or remote office work creates body stiffness. One thing required in surfing is flexibility. Flexibility does not come just from touching our fingers to our toes. The whole back side of our body needs to be loose.

The Preparation for Seniors to Surf

I listened to a yoga class taking place on the sand where I teach surfing. The instructor was giving them exercises and mentioned how the hamstrings, buttocks, and lower back need to be stretched as though they get tight together. Yoga is one method. Youngsters get loose through gymnastics.

You can do exercises in your home. You can do burpies, squats, and deadlifts. None require weights. Each loosens and strengthens the necessary surf muscles. If you think that is too tough, wait until you try to do a pop up in the water.

Push ups are the next necessity. Surfers have to lift their bodies off the surf board. First they do a push up to get their upper body off the board. Then they place a foot under their butt flat on the board to stand up and get their lower body off the board. Can you lift your body from the floor on one leg?

Paddling is important and the most tiring aspect of surfing. Swimmers have an advantage. The paddling however is like sprinting. Swimmers should do intervals of ten seconds where they try to swim faster than their normal pace. Cables are a good exercise. Cables can be curled around a post and used to pull facing the post and push facing away from the post.

All these exercises to get surfing fit are great lifestyle improvers. They will help you enjoy your every day activities. They will help you to engage in other activities that would be fun without fear of injury or exhaustion. Surf fit is life fit.
