What Are the Reasons People Fall Surfing is puzzling especially to beginners. Many people who try to learn surfing themselves either give up or decide to get lessons. Surfing looks simple but it is more technical than beginners imagine. It also requires timing and rhythm.

A second area of importance is the physical capabilities of surfers. Too many lack the basic necessities to make surfing a smooth effort. Those that are most successful quickly are lean, participate in many sports, include gymnastics or yoga, and are aerobically fit. Flexibility is a common aspect lacking in new surfers.

The Basics of Riding the Surf Board and Not Falling Off

Surfing is about rhythm and timing. The beginner cannot recognize the steps. The surfer has to time the wave. The surfer has to position their board in the right spot. The surfer catches the wave and at the right time proceeds to execute his pop up. He has to land in the right stance to ride the surfboard.

All of these are problem areas for new surfers. They don’t recognize the right wave to ride. Even riding foam waves after I have pushed students in several as they watch the waves, they don’t know the right ones to pick when they start catching foam waves on their own. The surfer has to know when to paddle. This is a difficult concept for many and they try to get on the board before the wave has even arrived or they don’t paddle when the wave hits the board and just grab the rails or jump up immediately.

The pop up takes the surfer through a transition of lying stable on the board and paddling to the unstable part where they execute a pop up, to the stable part of being in the right stance and riding. The experts make it look easy. The beginner encounters problems all along the way. Beginners paddle and then put their hands in front of their shoulders in an already pushed up position and push the nose of the board under water or tip it over. The hands have to be placed next to the chest in a man’s push up position or the ride is over.

The stance on the surfboard for beginners has to have their weight equal on both sides of the middle stringer. So many pop up into a stance like a skateboarder with their butt over one rail and one hand trailing. This causes them to fall off the butt side of the board. The second sin is they don’t get their hands released before the front foot hits the board. Then their hands and feet are on the board at the same time. With their nose in front of their toes, they fly off the front of the board.

Even in lessons with an instructor, beginners have difficulty putting it all together. I frequently get intermediates who have never learned the basics or have lapsed into bad habits. They think we should go outside and work on real waves, but they need to start over and ride foam waves correctly. Get the complete instructions on how to surf in my Surf Guide below.
