Is Learning to Surf Difficult?
Many people who would like to surf wonder whether Learning to Surf is Difficult? The thought of the difficulty keeps lots of people from trying. Many parents of kids I teach say they don’t think the could do it now and they are only in their 40’s.
Surfing is easy for some and difficult for others. The first indicator of whether it will be easy is weight. Being overweight makes its difficult to impossible. The second indicator is activity level. Surfing is full body and demanding and not a good idea for sedentary people. After that, it tests a person’s ability to learn. This might be called coordination or getting the body and brain to work together and some people don’t have it, at any age.
Who Are the Best Students?
Who make the best students. Lean, active, teenage girls. They do so much including dancing. Girls are typically better learners than boys. Next in line are lean active teenage boys. They are strong and should be coordinated if they are physically active. They have good instincts and lots of body strength.
Strength and flexibility are important. Strength to lift the body off the board in both the upper body and lower body. Flexibility to get the back foot flat on the board to stand up on one foot to lift the hands and make way for the other foot. This is where a lean body and power to weight ratio emerge. Does a person have the strength to lift their own weight?
Can You Learn?
Learning is a necessary tool. Our instincts are not correct for surfing. We start standing up as a toddler but standing up on a surfboard is alien to our sense of correctness. If we can’t let go of our instincts and thoughts, we can’t learn the new process. I give students a count to say outloud which is teh command for each step of the sequence and we practice on the beach.
This introduces the next phenomena. Everyone’s mind goes “gaga” in the water .I warn them it will happen and they prove me right. I correct what people are doing and some can make the changes. Others cannot. They get stuck in the incorrect process their brain can manage and can’t change. Surprisingly kids are usually victims of this phenomena. They can’t focus and coordinate. Teens are better. Adults can be very good if they have been active. Seniors haven’t been learning or moving for a lot of years and have lost coordination between brain and body.
Surfing is a Full Body Sport
Surfing is full body exercise and technical. It demands coordination and the ability to learn which is what coordination is. It serves people that are of normal weight and have been active. It takes courage. A lot of people are afraid of standing up. Funny how people want to learn to surf but don’t want to stand up on the surfboard because they are afraid they will fall. They don’t know they are afraid until they are in the water .Once I point it out to them they usually can correct or manage their fears.
Give it a try. Everyone whether successful or not says its fun.
