People wonder how overweight people get lean surfing. It is through a combination of strategies, patience, and persistence. A human body does not like to relinquish weight easily because early man needed his fat to subsist in lean (starvation) times (the winter).

Yet, if like early man, a person exercises and gives his body the right nutrition, the body will release the bad fats. The body needs to know it is not starving and then has little problem allowing exercise and good nutrition to take hold.

The Fundamentals of Developing a Good Training Program

The surfer’s body is lean for many reasons. Don’t forget many of them are teens and fat burning machines. On the other hand, obesity among children, teens, and adults is at an all time high and expected by the government to hit 50% of the population by 2030. That says there is a crisis among us because weight is the precedent for disease.

The basics of any training program is exercise and good nutrition. This was the modus operandi of early man. He walked ten miles a day, ate natural foods, probably slept well if he wasn’t on the tiger watch, and often ran down his game until they were tired. Can you duplicate that regimen? Probably not necessary, but assimilating the routine is how surfers get lean.

A professional surf includes cross training to build strength, stamina, and flexibility into his routine in addition to daily surfing. His nuttition prepares him for exercise and recovery. The muscles need carbohydrates and protein for fuel. They need the same for recovery. Muscles burn fat when the glucose from carbohydrates becomes depleted. Professionals don’t want the muscle to begin burning muscle because there are not adequate nutrients.

An exercise program begins with the first step. Surfing strength is developed from building the upper torso, the core, and the lower torso; yes, everything. It is a full body sport. Flexibility is developed by stretching like with yoga, but many floor exercises and weights can develop great flexibility. Stamina is developed best by surfers through paddling, but muscle can save the day when the nutrients have been depleted. Aerobics is one great way to develop muscle stamina.

A surfer with little effort enjoys the rewards of exercise and just has to consume the right nutrients to support his efforts and recovery. You can learn to do the same without surfing being your only exercise. You can build your physique in daily life and become fit to surf. I recommend the book below even if you are not overweight to create a balanced program that gets you fit to surf.
