How Many Lessons for a Beginner to Be Proficient Surfer
Many people wanting to add surfing to their life wonder How Many Lessons for a Beginner to be a Proficient Surfer. That is a good question and it varies on many factors. A few cannot stand on the surf board on their first lesson and a few are riding real waves on the first lesson.
The few that cannot stand on their first lesson are mostly people who are overweight. They need to begin a weight loss strength building regimen to get into surf shape. Those that can ride real waves their first lesson are outstanding athletes who learn well, have good coordination between what their brain hears and their body, are in good physical condition, and have courage.
How Does the Average Surfer Progress
That leaves a lot of middle ground. Most people are standing on their first lesson and riding a foam wave to the beach. They mostly need a lot of coaching to eliminate their mistakes and reverse bad muscle memory from other activities. So many beginners ride in an instinctive stance I call snowboarding with one hand trailing and they have to learn to ride square to the front before they can feel accomplished.
Most people improve markedly in the second lesson because they are fresh and have made progress learning the basics. Their corrections now are fewer and they can focus on some finer points that greatly improve their surfing. It should also be time to start paddling out and catching bigger foam waves. Here the surfer is learning to read the ocean and the waves, getting more comfortable with waves, and building courage.
By the third lesson, most of the mistakes should have been eliminated and the surfer is ready to progress to small real waves or practice well on their own. With consistent good practice, the surfer can begin real waves and then build to bigger real waves. At a point they may decide to buy a hard board or maybe ride a shorter foam board. Neither is necessary to keep advancing. The foam boards can take a surfer to advanced riding and techniques.
