How Fast Can Beginner Surfers Short Board

how long before surfers can ride the short board

Beginner surfers are often excited about riding smaller boards and the question arises How Fast Can Beginner Surfers Ride Short Boards. The process to move from beginner soft tops to short boards is conditional on some basics which include frequency of visits to the water .

The short board is a great tool for riding waves and professionals love short boards because they say it is an extension of themselves as much as a tool. They mean they can easily maneuver it in a wave to perform their maneuvers and tricks. Getting to that state, like many sports, requires progressing through the requirements.

Surfing is Physically Demanding

Surfing is physically demanding. Surfers that are normal weight benefit and find the techniques easier to execute. Surfing requires upper body, lower body, and core strength. The surfer needs to be flexible and not just a matter of touching toes to the floor. The surfer needs stamina because the paddling is very tiring. A surfer needs to be a good learner, coordinated, and have courage. This builds a good picture of the requirements to advance.

Finally, the surfer needs to visit the water often because techniques, timing, and stamina fade quickly. The beginner surfer should start with a high volume soft top either 8′ or 9′ long. With mastering techniques, the surfer can start moving shorter slowly. The first hard board should not be shorter than 7’6″ and should be at least 21+” in width and 2 3/4″+ in thickness. If a surfer cannot visit the water often, the soft top may satisfy their needs for a long time.

Having Fun Should Always Be the Goal

The true fun of surfing is to catch a lot of rides and enjoy. Moving too fast beyond one’s capabilities results in frustration and no fun. The surfer learns to catch foam waves and then real waves. He learns to pop up so he has the correct stance on the board. The surfer starts by riding foam waves to the beach. Then he can paddle out and catch bigger foam waves and then small real waves.

Once the surfer is riding real waves he begins learning the techniques including bottom turns, cut backs, and accelerating. A surfer can spend a lot of time learning on his soft top before he may find the need to ride a shorter hard board. A smaller board is no advantage if the surfer cannot utilize its capabilities. Have patience and have fun.
