How Beginner Surfers Pop Up

One of the basic fundamentals for learning to surf is How Beginner Surfers Pop Up. The process is taught differently by different instructors and YouTube videos, but one way is proven effective.

One of the fundamentals for beginner surfers is to pop up so they are in the correct stance on the surfboard. Many practices have the beginner popping up in a more snowboard or skateboard style with their butt over one rail. Surfboards are designed so that the surfer’s weight is equal on both sides of the middle stringer. It is important that the surfer’s weight is equal on both sides of the middle stringer.

Getting the Right Stance is Key

The proper stance is feet shoulder width apart with hips and shoulders square to the front. This means both shoulders and hips are parallel to the beach and the hands are out in front where they can be seen. If a shoulder drops back, it rotates the hips over the rail (side of the board) and the surfer falls off on the butt side.

A good beginner popup begins with the surfer paddling hard to get in front of the wave. We’ll assume it is a foam wave which is where beginners should start. Then the surfer puts his hands next to his rib cage in a man’s pushup position. He rests here a second as he assesses the board is going straight and is level. Then he pushes up and brings one foot (either right or left) up two feet on the board and places it flat under his butt. Putting it flat allows the surfer to stand up on it.

Completing the Beginner Popup

As the surfer starts to rise, he releases his hands from the board. The hands must be released and rise as the front foot moves toward the nose. The front foot is placed across the middle stringer at a 45-degree angle. Now the surfer is in an upright position with weight equal over the front and back leg with knees flexed to absorb bumps. If the stance is correct, the surfer will ride straight to the beach without any work or balancing problems.

Beginners often think they need good balance, but they don’t need it as much as they need some upper and lower body strength and good flexibility. In the right stance, the surfer will not feel the need for better balance. The same popup process can be perfected and used next on real waves .Many professionals can be seen to put a back foot on the board first before the front. foot.

An advanced popup is pushing up and moving both feet at the same time to the right stance. This requires more strength and athleticism. It might come to beginners as they progress. It will be helpful on shortboards where the surfer’s feet are handing off the back of the board and the whole body has to be brought to the stance while riding down the face of a wave. Riding down the face of a wave, the advanced pop up is easier.
