Good Beginner Surfer Training for Doing Pop Ups
After a surfer has had their first lesson or before that there is Good Beginner Surfer Training for Doing Pop Ups. Pop ups are essential for surfing because they are how surfers get from the prone to standing position in the correct stance.
The pop up requires upper and lower body strength as well as core strength and some agility. Teens who are involved in various sports, dancing, and general free play usually have the necessary physical attributes. Those who are more sedentary have allowed their active muscles and flexibility to deteriorate. The best three things to support the pop up are pushups, squats, and dead lifts.
Losing Weight and Building Strength
A serious hindrance to those who have been sedentary is being overweight. This adds an extra burden in that the body on the board is in the down dog position (yoga) as the surfer pushes up off the board and creates an extra burden for lifting the upper torso off the board. Many overweight people cannot get any further than pushing up and bringing their knees on the board.
All surfers benefit by losing weight. Professionals try to lose weight to get lighter on their thin boards so they don’t sink. Everyone else benefits because the pop ups are easier if there is less weight to lift. Surfers talk about the power to weight ration meaning is there sufficient strength to lift the body into the stance.
The Stance Has to Be Correct on the Board
The correct stance on the board is what I call pushing the box. The torso is upright with the hands in front of the body as though pushing a tall box. The feet are 3′ apart with the front foot near the nose in a 45 degree forward angle. Weight is equal on the front and back leg. Knees are flexed. If the body is in the right stance, the board will go straight to the beach without any extra effort.
To get into the right stance, the surfer paddles to catch the wave and then places his hands flat on the board next to his rib cage. He pushes and brings a back foot under his butt and places it flat on the board. This requires good flexibility. The surfer stands on that foot to raise his body releasing the hands from the board as the other foot comes forward. This results in the correct stance.
Beginners can practice this in their living room to develop the specific surfing muscles and the balance and agility to do it in the water. Doing push ups, squats and dead lifts will create the muscles and flexibility that support the pop up.
