Get Fit for Surfing
With summer coming and everyone looking to get in the water it is time to Get Fit For Surfing. Surfing is different than other sports and has some specific areas to work on other than being in over all good physical condition.
Surfing is a full body sport. It requires strength, flexibility, and stamina. There are a few exercises that can target the most important muscles. Pushups are excellent for building the upper body strength for the pop up. They also help building the shoulders, arms and back for paddling. Weights could be added like bench presses, military presses, and cables to strengthen the arms.
Flexibility is Crucial
Flexibility is crucial for the pop up. This is an area most beginners suffer. Sitting tightens the pop up muscles. Squats and dead lifts loosen the hamstrings, buttocks and lower back. They can be engaged without weights. 40 squats and dead lifts a day will result in noticeable flexibility. They should be continued for as long as one is surfing because our activities of sitting reverse the good work.
Stamina is important to progress in surfing. Advancing in surfing from catching foam waves on the beach requires more paddling. Most beginners are tired quickly when they start paddling out through the waves to catch bigger foam waves. Paddling is good for improving paddling stamina. The muscles need to store more glucose. Paddling builds the storage capacity. Aerobics in general will build the cardiovascular system and muscle glucose storage.
Lose Weight for Better Effectiveness
Weight plays a big factor in surfing. Pros want to get lean so there is less weight on the surfboard for paddling. Less weight improves oxygen uptake while exercising. Less weight makes the pop up quicker and more agile. Overweight people can have trouble executing the pop up. In gaining the weight, they probably stopped exercising. They have lost cardiovascular capacity and strength in their upper body and legs for popups. It takes more strength to lift more weight.
Putting everything together will bring noticeable results. Lose weight, do pushups, squats and dead lifts and soon the pop up and stamina will be better.
