Families Learn to Surf Together

Families learn to surf together in Oceanside for a great way to enjoy a vacation and have an activity everyone can join. The great thing about surfing is it is an outdoor exercise activity everyone can do in the same place. No one gets left behind.

Families begin in shallow water riding foam waves that are breaking close to shore. Swimming is not necessary, but it makes people more comfortable in the water and especially when they get turned upside down on a surfboard. Comfort in the ocean is important and many people gain great comfort as a lesson progresses.

Family Learning Fundamentals

Groups up to six can learn at one time. Lessons begin with a dryland portion and then everyone goes into the water. The dryland covers safety and standing up techniques. Once in the water, students are pushed for a few waves and then they begin catching their own waves.

If students follow the crucial points, they are often riding on the first push. I teach students a count that is the sequence for standing up and if they say it aloud in the water, they learn much faster. Surfing is much more technical than people expect and they have to be able to focus to succeed. People who are good at learning new things and especially with their body excel at surfing.

Conditioning helps make surfing easier. During the pandemic, people have not been as active. The physical demands of surfing are upper body strength, flexibility and stamina. Kids that have been active have no problems. Adults that have been sedentary often lack the flexibility to make surfing easy. Power to weight ratio is a term that describes having the strength to lift your body off the surfboard. It is very relevant.

Once everyone has learned to stand up and ride the surfboard they are very comfortable in the ocean. They gain that connection with Mother Nature that surfers crave. Surfing is a sport that can be enjoyed in many places and often year around. It can be a great activity the family always enjoys together.
