The Beginner Surfing Basics

The beginner surfing basics are the fundamentals that surfers use through all progress including advanced surfing. The beginner learns techniques that are crucial in foam waves and then real waves.

The beginner lessons are about handling and learning to ride the surf board in easy to manage foam waves. As progress continues, surfers learn to ride bigger foam waves and real waves. In the process, the surfer continues to learn how to read and catch waves.

The Surf Basics

The beginner learns how to roll onto a surf board to catch foam waves. Their body has to be positioned so their feet are at the back of the board. Amazing how many beginners keep forgetting this and pearling their surfboard (nose under water).

The beginner surfer learns how to paddle for waves. They paddle with their forearms not the hands. Strokes have to be deep and powerful. The beginner learns to get a head start on incoming waves. The board is not a boogie board. You don’t jump on two feet before the wave arrives.

Beginners learn the beginner pop up. The student learns to stand in a balanced posture after following a specific sequence. The surfer should have hips and shoulders squared to the front, not ride with a should back like in skateboarding or snowboarding. The torso has to be upright with knees flexed and feet soft to ride the board.

Advancing in Surfing

After the surfer has learned to roll over on the board and ride foam waves, he learns to paddle through waves and turn around to catch bigger foam waves. Eventually he learns to aim for real waves. This requires good skills and courage.

Finally the surfer is learning how to catch real waves and ride in the pocket of the wave. He learns bottom turns, cut backs, accelerating, and the ultimate surfer fun, ripping the lip.

Surfers need stamina and the more often one can visit the water, the quicker stamina develops. Maintaining the timing necessary for catching waves and performing maneuvers also requires frequent visits to the water.

The main thing is to always have fun and not to try and advance too fast.
