Can Overweight People Surf
I have been asked Can Overweight People Surf. There are lots of overweight surfers. It is a little different question if you ask if overweight people can learn to surf. The issue becomes twofold. Being overweight makes surfing more difficult if you are not experienced. When people become overweight they have stopped exercising.
The problem for sedentary overweight people learning to surf is the physical requirements of surfing. It requires strength, flexibility, and stamina. A person needs more strength the more overweight they are because they have to lift their body off the surfboard. But overweight people can get fit to surf.
The Physical Barriers for Overweight Surfers to Learn
The first thing new students do in the water is roll over onto the surfboard as the foam wave is approaching. Overweight people find the balancing on a surfboard is difficult. They frequently struggle to get their body balanced and try to paddle at the same time to catch a wave. The bigger the surfboard, the easier it becomes.
The process of riding a surfboard begins with catching the wave and placing your hands on the surfboard in a man’s push up position. The surfer then pushes his upper body off the surfboard and places on foot under his butt flat on the board. He then stands on this rear leg as he raises his hands and moves the other foot to the front of the surfboard.
The surfer faces three physical requirement here. He must have the flexibility to get his foot under his body to stand up on it. He must be able to stand on one leg as he lifts his body. He then has to release his hands so the other foot can make to the front of the surfboard. This requires strength, agility, and some balance.
Being overweight may mean a person has lost muscle control over his physical weight. There is more weight usually as fat than the bone and muscular structure can manipulate in a smooth action. The challenge is for the person to both lose weight and build strength at the same time. Add flexibility and stamina.
This all can be achieved in a focused program. The aspiring student can get fit to surf by working on each of the demands a little at a time every day.
