Beginner Surfers Get Fit to Surf after they have tried it once and realize they need to physically improve. Surfing improvement is a process of learning more technical skills and getting more surf fit. The professionals follow this path as well as aspiring beginners.

Beginner surfers always say the same two things. This is more technical than I expected and more tiring than I expected. Being in better physical shape allows longer practice/fun sessions. The fatigue is generated most by paddling, but over all body strength helps increase practice times when the stamina is waning.

Losing Weight and Getting Fit to Surf

The combination of getting lighter and stronger helps participants in most sports and recreations. Surfing is a full body sport so unlike running, the upper body also needs to be developed. Just running builds the legs and cardiovascular. Surfing is cardiovascular, but cross training is greatly helpful if you can’t surf a few times a week. Surfing needs upper body strength, flexibility, joint mobility, and lower body strength.

Losing weight should be a long term program. I have experienced losing weight a few times and I try to make all the practices last a lifetime. Therefore, the steps can be slow and patient. Most people first need to eliminate the addictions. Then add good foods and slowly eliminate the bad foods. I like calorie restriction, limited eating windows (intermittent fasting), drinking over 100 ounces of water a day, and daily exercise.

Building upper body, core, and lower body strength with flexibility for surfing can be assisted with a few key exercises. Start with pushups. Add burpies. Then add squats and deadlifts. I do squats and deadlifts with a 35 pound barbell plate, but you can start without weights. A regular routine will increase pop up efficiency within a month, A smooth pop up is the key to progress.

Learn the technical skills by reading, Youtube, observing, and asking questions. Of course, regular practice helps implement what you have learned. I always have something I want to practice when I enter the water. Watching others (who are doing what you want to learn) is a great way to advance. Then ask them questions if possible. Most advanced surfers will say I don’t know what I do, I just do it.
