When to Move to Surfing Short Board

When to move to the surfing short board is a decision many new surfers contemplate. Carrying the surfing short board seems to be the ultimate cool. The short board surfers seem to have the most style. Short board surfers are the ones you see most in the movies.

The surfing short board is also the top of the game and requires lots of technique, strength, stamina, and courage. Its the ultimate cool because a lot of dues are paid by the time a surfer can proficiently surf a short board.

Learning the Surfing Fundamentals

The beginner surfer learns the fundamentals that are advanced with practice to the same techniques used by short board surfers. The beginner surfer learns to spot good foam waves to ride, position his board in the right spot, catch the wave, pop up into the perfect position on the board and ride to the beach.

The beginner surfer progresses with catching bigger foam waves and starting to catch real waves, developing strength and stamina, and building courage to ride bigger waves.

The Timing of Real Waves

Short boards are for riding real waves. Real waves peak within a short window. The surfer has to see waves form and position his board in the correct spot. As the wave begins to arc, the surfer has to allow the wave to come under his surf board before paddling. This requires timing and courage because not judging it correctly always results in a crash.

Whereas the surfer rides a foam wave straight to the beach, a surfer on a real wave rides in the pocket as it unfurls to the right or left. He learns to either ride down the face, point the board into the pocket before popping up or paddling to the corner where the wave is smaller.

How to Progress to the Short Board

There is so much to learn, the surfer wants to move slow so that he doesn’t lose the fun trying to progress. Progress is slow and the surfer has to be patient. There is so much to learn.

After the surfer learns the fundamentals on a soft top board, he should move to shorter boards six inches at a time while maintaining the width and thickness of high volume boards.

Mastering the techniques will lead to more courage and more courage is needed to take on bigger challenges. Surfers should not move to more difficult boards if they have not mastered the fundamentals at each length. It is not fun to be on a cool short board if you cannot surf it. In the line up, surfers will cut you off from catching waves if you don’t catch and ride them.
