It is the end of the year and time for a little contemplation about one’s surfing progress. What Goals Do Surfers Create? Progress requires a comprehensive effort in several areas. Now is a good time to plan the new year.

First, the easier one. So many surfers set riding bigger waves as a goal. Riding bigger waves does not require a new board. It does require more courage. Surfers know bigger waves fall harder because they are faster and heavier. A surfer wants to maximize their skills so they are up to the task. That may involve several tactics.

Getting in Better Shape and Conditioning Are Important

Losing weight is often a good starting place. Less weight makes a surfer more agile and improves oxygen uptake. Catching bigger waves necessitates more stamina and more agility. The surfer has to be confident their pop up is adequate for the next level of surfing. Pros say catching the wave is the important part and that once on the wave, the rest is more common place.

Getting stronger is important. Bigger waves move faster and need better paddling to catch. Surfers realize their limits and for really big waves they get towed in. But, the rule is that if surfers are paddling into waves, the tow surfers have to wait. Strength is good for beating out the other surfers in the line up. There is often a race between a few that want a wave coming in and the one that gets in the best position or gets in position first earns the right of way.

Improving Skills and Techniques

Improving skills and techniques is important to learn more maneuvers and tricks. Surfers are generally working on something like ripping the lip. Ways to learn include watching youtube, observing other surfers, reading, and getting coached. Time in the water is very important to progress. Maybe a goal is to create more time to surf. So many surfers are in the water before and after work.

Improving nutrition and sleep. These are foundations for all athletes. Some professional athletic coaches say if you want to get better sleep more. Their students try to get 10 hours of sleeps. Nutrition fuels the body and helps recovery for spent muscles. Nutrition helps the spent muscles develop more glucose storage which is the fuel for stamina. Athletes also train the body to burn fat by long slow work outs. When the carbs are gone, we want a body that will efficiently burn fat for fuel. After 20 minutes, the carbs can be spent.

The beauty of getting in shape to surf is overall life quality improves. This includes performance, appearance, and attitude. People in great shape tend to be more optimistic. They have learned the discipline to improve and that speaks to any goal for which they might aspire.
