A surf lesson is like a mini boot camp. It is a real work out. You are given instructions and expected to execute. It is not passive like going on a ride in Disneyland. The student has to do all the work. The student does discover a lot of fun.

The beginner surfer learns how to get on a surfboard correctly and catch a wave. Even those who never stand up find this is a lot of fun. It is a very fast boogie board. Those who advance get to paddle out through the waves to catch bigger ones. They learn how fun it is to negotiate the waves and look for the good one.

Surfing is timing and rhythm. Once surfers get the feel of the timing, the techniques are much easier. It is all very abstract at the beginning. I give students a count that says each step in the sequence of standing up. I say to say it out loud in the water. Students find that in the water, they forget everything they learned in the dry land and resort to their instincts. Their instincts are wrong.

Often it takes an hour before the student starts saying it makes a difference to count out loud. That is when they are finally willing to let go of their short cuts and follow the instructions. Many students come into a lesson with muscle memory from skateboarding, snowboarding, and even dance and yoga. These are often a hindrance for surfing. The count and sequence can help students work through old muscle memory and develop good surfing muscle memory.

Surfers who want to get better have to surf more often and/or engage in out of water cross training. Surfing is a full body sport and surfers learn their weaknesses. Sometimes its weight, sometimes flexibility, or strength or stamina. Working to become surfing fit is a great lifestyle change. When you are fit to surf, you can tackle most any kind of recreation.
