Two versions of the surfing pop up include the beginner and advanced pop ups. The advanced pop up requires more strength and athletic ability and the beginner pop up is easier for beginners without the strength or balance requirements.

Comparing the Beginner and Advanced Pop ups

The beginner pop up and the advanced pop up go through the first three counts. When I teach students, I ask them to count each step outloud in the water. The first is paddling. They paddle three or four times when the wave arrives to get in front of the foam waves.

The second step is placing their hands on the board in a man’s push up position under their chest. They do not want to grip the rails because then they tip the board.

The Third Step of the Pop Up

The third step is pushing up off the board with arms extended and the knees and lower body still resting quietly. Here is where the two processes differ. With the beginner pop up, the student places a back foot on the board in the middle under their butt so they can stand on it.

With the beginner pop up, the student pushes to raise himself. With the advanced pop up the student pushes hard to then snap his two feet under his body at the same time. The front foot goes under the chest and lands in the middle of the board.

With the beginner pop up, the back foot goes flat on the board under the butt and then the student stands up on it raising his hands and driving his front foot forward to land in the middle of the board.

Strength Requirements Differ

The difference in strength requirements of the two processes is the beginner pop up uses the back leg for the power to stand up. Once up on the back foot, the front foot is weightless and can be driven forward. In the advanced pop up, the upper body is pushing off the board while the core is needed to bring the legs under the body.

New students have problems with the advanced pop up also because the front foot has to be landed in the middle of the board and the body has to be in the correct posture requiring more balance, flexibility, and timing.

The correct posture on the board for both processes is front foot at a 45 degree angle facing forward in the middle of the board near the nose. The hips and shoulders have to be squared to the front. Don’t let one shoulder drop back and have a trailing hand, which I call snow boarding. Both hands should be in front where they can be seen. Knees are flexed.
