The Surf Pop Up Sequence
The surf pop up sequence makes learning surfing much easier. In every group, I usually have one or two students who are riding on the first wave.
Saying the Surf Pop Up Sequence Out Loud
The trick with the surf pop up sequence is memorizing it, saying it out loud, and following it with your body. The count is paddle, hands on board, back foot on board, stand up, and front foot on board. Seems simple enough.
At the beginning I push students into the waves and soon they are paddling for their own waves. The student has to paddle hard three or four times until the nose of the board rises. The wave lifts the tail, and you can’t stop paddling until the nose and board are flat again on the surface.
The Second Step in the Pop Up Sequence
Hands have to near the chest and flat on the board in a man’s push up position. You can’t grab the rails or put them in front of your shoulders. This is a most crucial step. When students paddle and then go into the push up position with arms extended and locked they either turn over the board or fly off the front with their momentum.
The push up and putting the back foot on the board should be one word. It is important to put the back foot under one’s butt and flat on the board so you can stand up on it.
At this is occurring, you are lifting your hands and upper torso into an upright position and driving the now weightless front foot to the front of the board. The stance should have feet shoulder width (3′) apart.
The Right Posture as a Result of the Surf Pop Up
The posture on the board has to be front foot in the middle of the board at a 45 degree angle facing forward. The back foot is perpendicular to the two rails. The shoulders and hips are square to the front without one shoulder trailing to the back (crucial). Both hands should be in front so they can be seen.
If the posture is correct, the surfboard goes straight and there is no effort to keep it level. Many students get this on the first try.
