The Beginner and Advanced Surfer Pop Up

The Beginner and Advanced Surfer Pop Up for beginner and intermediate surfers. The pop up is one of the big tests for beginners to test their fitness for surfing. It combines the need for upper body strength, core strength, flexibility, and eventually stamina. After a surfer is tired, the pop up is the first thing to go.

The pop up is about timing and about surf specific muscles. Beginners and intermediates can practice daily in their living rooms. Certain exercises keep the body strong and flexible and can also be included in the surfer’s daily routine.

The Basics of Pop Ups and Pop Up Conditioning

The surfer paddles to catch a wave. The beginner starts with a foam wave and advanced surfers are catching green or real waves. Then the surfer places his hands on the surfboard in a man’s push up position. The beginner pushes up, put’s a rear foot under his butt (usually the right foot), then stands on that leg as he raises his hands and moves his body and front foot towards the nose of the surfboard.

The advanced pop up advances both feet at the same time. The surfer catches the wave, then puts his hands in a man’s push up position. Then he pushes up explosively so he can bring his front foot (usually left foot, regular footed) under his chest and lands between where his hands were. As he pops up, he is raising his hands and torso so that he is upright when his feet land.

Several exercises are excellent for building surf specific muscles. Upper body power is developed well with push ups. Flexibility is aided with burpies. Flexibility and lower body strength are supported with squats and dead lifts. Core strength can be assisted with planks. These exercises can build a smooth and powerful pop up. As the surfer rides bigger waves, he wants the confidence that he can pop up smoothly. He wants to be thinking about the wave and not whether he can make the pop up.
