Short Board Surfing Techniques
Beginners to short boarding want to learn the basic Short Board Surfing Techniques.
Hopefully, a surfer’s advance to short board has been slow and patient learning to handle the lower volume by reducing board lengths just six inches at a time.
Once a surfer starts with a hard board like the 7’6″ long fun board, he can start executing techniques that were more difficult on the soft tops. The first reward is the duck dive. The surfer can get through on coming foam waves by pushing the nose under water before the foam arrives and putting one foot on the tail of the board pushing the nose deeper. The other leg is in the air to support the weight on the driving foot. Once under water, the surfer can relax the driving foot and the board will pop up behind the foam.
Learning the Bottom Turn
The first wave catching technique is used often. It is the bottom turn. Riding down the face, the surfer riding regular foot and wanting to carve right turns his eyes in the direction of the turn and then his upper torso. Then as the torque reaches his feet, he applies pressure to his toes. This drives the rail into the wave face and the board carves right.
The surfer uses the bottom turn to ride up the face of the wave for tricks or to escape a falling lip. He turns his eyes up the fact and his upper torso followed by pressure on his toes. He can ride up as long as the pressure remains. At the top he can fly over the lip to escape or for an aerial trick. If he wants to rip the lip, he does a cut back at the top to reverse direction.
Learning the Cut Back
The cut back is used to reverse direction on the wave to get back to the power. It can also be used to stall waiting for a barrel or for style. To rip the lip, it is applied at the top of the face so the tail sprays the lip as the surfer heads back down the face. The surfer riding in the pocket, turns his eyes toward the bottom of the wave and moves his upper torso the same and applies pressure to the heals if he is riding regular foot. The board will carve a reverse.
Accelerating is basic for hard boards. It is to gain speed to escape the falling lip and to perform the next maneuver. The surfer moves the nose of the board up and down the face with his front foot. Then he releases to allow the nose to drop and then pushes the nose up again. Two or three pumps is considered adequate for tricks.
Learning the basics will be the entry to the more advanced tricks surfers may want to practice. These techniques can also be practiced on 8′ soft tops which don’t have the maneuverability of hard boards but are nimble enough to do techniques.
