Overweight people are learning to surf. In the pandemic era in which we still live, many people are afraid of indoor public activities. It is also common that during the lockdown, we all put on extra pounds. It was easier to maintain normal weight when everything was open and more difficult in lock down.

Now people want to get moving again. They want to get outdoors where it is safe. They would like to find fun activities and maybe get some exercise. Surfing is the perfect solution to everything. No infections were ever traced to our beach activities during the year of 2020.

The Basics of Learning to Surf When You Are Overweight

As a Certified Health Coach and Personal Trainer in addition to Surf Coach, I know most people would not know the medical and health field definition of weight classes. There is an accepted Body Mass Index that defines for everyone what someone’s weight classification is based on their height and weight. There is a classification for underweight, normal weight, overweight, obese, and extremely obese.

These can easily be learned by adding your height and weight to a chart and it will calculate. The difficulty for overweight people learning to surf is not just the weight but the fact they have stopped exercising and building strength. Two factors contribute to their difficulties of standing on a surfboard. They have lost strength and flexibility. They have also lost stamina from not participating in aerobic exercises.

Strength is needed to push up off the surfboard and then putting a foot under your butt so you can stand on it. Flexibility is need to get that foot flat on the surfboard. When people lose flexibility in their hamstrings, buttocks, and lower back, they have difficulty with this move. The difficulty is increased with the a person’s added weight.

Learning to surf requires a two prong attack. The person has to lose weight and get stronger. Losing weight necessitates better nutrition and stepped up exercise to increase metabolism. Getting stronger necessitates some surf specific exercises to build the necessary surf muscles and flexibility.

The best exercises for building surf muscle and flexibility are pushups, burpies, squats, deadlifts, and planks. These approach the biggest muscle groups in the upper body, lower body, and core. A combination of these exercises on a daily basis or a few times a week will start to create noticeable differences in a person’s pop up. The other good exercise is to practice pop ups in one’s living room. I suggest five to twenty practice pop ups a day.

Aerobics are important for energy and recovery. Surfing requires high outputs of energy to paddle to catch waves. Then the body has to recover quickly for catching the next wave. People who have not been doing aerobics notice they are tired quickly. Walking is a start as is swimming, biking, and treadmills. Then intervals should be introduced in which the heartbeat is increased for a minute or two.

The combination of nutrition and exercise will slowly build a person’s capacity for more vigorous exercise and surfing strength. This program would create an improvement in your lifestyle creating the capability to do more fun activities and make every day life easier and more pleasurable.
