Oceanside Beginner Surfers Catch Real Waves
Oceanside is a great place for beginners and Oceanside Beginner Surfers Catch Real Waves. The beginner starts with catching foam waves while standing in waist deep water. They roll over onto the surfboard as the wave approaches.
Wave catching is about timing and good judgment to pick out a rideable wave. When a foam wave is about 20′ away the surfer rolls over onto the board and paddles easy to get momentum. When the wave is 3′ feet away, he paddles hard three times to get in front of the wave. There is a sensation of the board taking off from the push of the wave. The surfer paddles until he feels that and then he puts his hands on the board.
Have Patience to Catch Waves
It is important to have the patience to catch the wave before putting hands on the board. Most beginners are too anxious and think they have to stand up fast. That is a mistake. I give beginners a sequence to follow that requires smooth and inclusion of each step. It doesn’t need to be fast.
The surfer has to land in the right stance. This is important. They must have their hips and shoulders squared to the front. If there is a hand trailing like snowboarders or skateboarders, surfers will fall. The body needs to be equally divided over the center stringer, right and left sides. If their is a hand trailing with one shoulder back, the butt is over one rail putting pressure on the heels and causing a fall.
Moving on to Catch Bigger Waves
After the surfer has learned to ride straight to the beach, they can paddle out through the waves and catch bigger foam waves. In Oceanside, there are real waves mixed in with the foam waves as the real waves that broke on the outside, reform inside for nice 2′ to 3′ real waves. These are perfect beginner waves.
The beginner is surprised by the pick up in speed by a real wave and usually bale as soon as they feel it. The have to get used to the real wave being smoother and faster. Whereas a foam wave pushes the surfboard on impact, the small real wave needs more paddling. The surfer always looks to see what is about to reach the surfboard. When he sees it arcing, he paddles hard up to 8 or 10 times until he feels the board being pushed. It is much more subtle that foam.
The pop up on a real wave is the same. The surfer can’t get anxious. It has to be smooth and have all the steps. The steps are paddle, put your hands in a man’s pushup position, wait a few seconds, then push and bring one foot under the butt placing it flat on the board, stand on it and raise the hands then bring the other foot to the nose of the board. Both hands should be in front of the surfer’s body. If he can’t see one hand, he is snowboarding.
Real waves on the inside are small and fun. Surfers often learn to catch these in the first lesson. As they learn, their courage builds with the confidence they can execute. At this point they could begin to paddle out for bigger waves as their courage allows.
