New Surfers Want to Carve

lsurfers want to carve

One of the most fun aspects of watching surfing is their carving and New Surfers Want to Carve. Carving practice can begin in foam waves and when I have students who are able to ride straight to the beach in a balanced posture, I introduce carving.

Beginner Surfers should learn to ride on the board in a balanced stance in what I cal “pushing the box”. Pretend you are going to push a tall box 10′. You place both hands on the box in front of you with feet separated and push. This is a good stance for surfing except the posture should be upright. Beginners should be on soft top surfboards riding foam waves near the beach.

Initiating the Carves

When riding straight to the beach with both hands in front and you are regular footed (left foot in front), you start the carve by looking in the direction you want to carve. Let’s say you are going right (face side) so you look right. At the same time, you turn your head and upper torso. This torques down to your feet where you apply a little pressure on your toes to initiate the carve. Move smoothly and not to aggressively to influence the board. Carving likes speed, but the foam is not fast and the soft top has large rails that will dig with being too aggressive.

Carving to the backside follows the same procedure. Look to the left and torque down the body to the heels to apply some pressure. On the backside especially, surfers have to be careful not to lean into the carve or they fall off the butt side. They must turn the upper torso and apply pressure to the heels.

Riding Real Waves

In riding real waves this leads to bottom turns and cut backs. A bottom turn is used coming down the face of the wave and turning into the pocket. The surfer executes a front side or back side carve. The cut back is a reversal of direction to get back to the power of the wave. The surfer turns down the face of the wave to return to the foam and then carves a cut back again to get back into the wave.

The surfer carves a bottom turn up the face while in the pocket to execute ripping the lip. At the top, he does a cut back to go back to the bottom of the wave while spraying the lip with the tail of the board. All other tricks and maneuvers start with these two maneuvers as they lead to aerials and 360’s.
