Marks Surf Instruction is a good place to begin for beginner to intermediate surfers. Oceanside waves at the Pier are fun for beginners to advanced because they have foam waves and good green waves. A surfer could transition from beginner to intermediate in one lesson.

The beginner starts with a dry land lesson and then enters the water. He is pushed for four or five waves to get the idea of timing and learning the pop up. Then he starts catching waves on his own. One secret to surfing is timing and rhythm. The new surfer has to slow down their racing mind to focus on the techniques.

After riding to the beach in foam waves, the beginner can start paddling out to ride bigger foam waves and then look for small real waves. It takes skill and more courage to ride bigger waves. A few have moved from this point to the line up where all the advanced surfers are catching green waves.

The intermediate usually has problems with their pop up and stance which is why they return for a tune up. The surfer has to have a stance on the board I call pushing a tall box. The hands are in front so the hips and shoulders are square to the front. Skateboarders, snowboarders, and many beginners like to stand sideways on the board with an arm trailing. This puts their butt over one rail and they fall off that side.

Surfers can prepare and progress quicker if they are in good condition, normal weight, and can learn. The best exercises for strength and flexibility for surfing are pushups and squats. Stamina is important for longer learning sessions, so an aerobic program is helpful.

Beginners start on high volume soft top boards to make catching waves, popping up, and riding easier. After time, the surfer can consider moving to lower volume hard boards or step up to hard long boards. After a while, the surfer learns what boards and riding style might be the most fun for him.
