What You Learn in Oceanside Surf Lessons

By

When I teach new students in Oceanside Surf Lessons, they come with a wide degree of expectations. Many adults have had surfing on their bucket list for a lifetime. The kids want to learn a new sport to add to their capabilities DSCF1095and many want something to do when they visit ocean destinations.

My goal is to make students independent so they can practice. This requires a few results from the lessons. The first is how to handle the surf board in the ocean. The second is how to manage the pop up in going from the prone to standing position. The third is how to judge and catch waves.

Students find handling the board is not something that come intuitively. The board can hurt you and certainly cause you to take the brunt force of the waves if not handled properly. Learning the pop up is a matter of mechanics and is clearly explained on the video of the landing page of this site. Catching waves is much more difficult than students imagine and once again, most instincts are wrong.

Handling the surf board begins with always facing it nose first into the waves and refraining from letting it get between your body and the wave. Once you start paddling for waves you learn your four options are to go over a wave, turn around and ride it, turn turtle or abandon the board and dive under the wave.

In popping up, students are not aware of what they are doing in the water even if they performed correctly in the dry land lesson. The water makes it more difficult and the wrong tendencies have to be corrected. It is important to learn how to do it correctly so that in the future students don’t practice incorrectly.

Finally, catching waves is timing. Students have to paddle before the wave arrives, paddle hard when it impacts the board and finally when the board is in front of the wave, they can execute the pop up. Most students pop up too soon if left to their own devices.

Students realize there is a lot more to learn than they ever imagined.
