Kids Learn to Surf
Kids learn to surf best in a series of lessons. They learn safety and surf techniques that help them advance quickly. Surfing is difficult and requires precision to advance. Everyone needs to be coached to get through the learning stages.
Kids learn to be comfortable in the ocean and most of them revel in the freedom of handling their board and catching their own waves. They immediately get the connection with Mother Nature.
Learning the Basics
In the movies, surfing looks so easy. That is because you see experts who have honed skills over years. Most students say very quickly it is more difficult than they imagined.
Students learn to get on their surf board properly and guide it in waves so it goes straight and stays level. This is often difficult for new students. Then they learn the process of going from the lying down position to standing up called the pop up.
If students can pop up into the right posture, they can ride to the beach. If they get up and fall quickly, it is because they are not executing the techniques properly. This is where the instruction fills in. Most students have to go through the process of corrections to get the techniques right.
Advancing to Bigger Waves
It is a common desire to ride bigger waves. I have even had little kids whom I was pushing in tiny waves say they wanted bigger waves. It is the perpetual challenge of the sport. Surfers spend their lives learning how to catch waves better and most find the ultimate size in which they are comfortable.
Kids start with small foam waves in waist deep water. After mastering the techniques, they learn to paddle out and turn around to catch the next level of waves. Depending on their skills, strength and courage, they could then paddle out to even bigger waves.
At a point, they can start catching real waves. This requires better timing and courage because crashes are common at the beginning. Real waves cause bigger crashes. Students learn to laugh off getting wrecked or they won’t want to advance.
A new set of techniques is learned for riding real waves. At this point surfers are no longer riding straight to the beach, but are entering the pocket and riding the wave arc until it dies out. Surfers learn to perform many maneuvers in the pocket, which is what everyone sees in the movies.
