Getting Fit for Surfing
Getting Fit for Surfing becomes an improvement to your lifestyle. Surfing is a full body sport that requires all systems working together as though you were training for a triathlon. Beginner surfers taking lessons often find their bodies don’t move well and they lack the strength and flexibility necessary. Surfing looks so easy.
The surfer is a top athlete for conditioning. He is strong, he is flexible, he has an excellent cardiovascular system, and he has lean muscle. Approaching these attributes requires training and anybody can do it. It takes focus and discipline. (check with a doctor if you have been sedentary to see if you can exercise.)
The Basics of Getting Fit for Surfing
Most people have been leading sedentary lives because they have been locked down and used to the screens for entertainment. In this process, muscles tighten and atrophy. Receptors in the muscles to absorb nutrients from the blood stream disappear and carbs by pass muscle and go to fat.
The first steps are activating all the muscles and building receptors to absorb glucose (glucose is created by the liver from carbohydrates. Glucose supplies the fuel to muscles for exertion and recovery. Beginner exercisers want to move slow and then add duration and intensity. 10 minute walks can lead to 30 minute and then one hour walks. The same with biking, swimming, and treadmills.
Building muscle groups can begin with simple exercises that progress to lifting weights for more strength and stamina. Beginner weight lifters should start with floor exercises without weights. Doing squats, deadlifts, lunges, pushups, and planks begin to wake up muscles. Working without weights creates the balance and form needed to add weights. YouTube has video on proper form for all exercises. Correct form prevents injuries.
These simple exercises listed above will build flexibility in the hamstrings, buttocks, and lower back. This flexibility is necessary for pop ups to stand on the surfboard. Most people who take lessons lack the most basic flexibility. People don’t realize that because they walk around and feel good, it doesn’t mean they have strength and flexibility to lift their body off a moving surfboard.
Being overweight is a detriment to learning surfing. BMI calculators quickly show you where you stand in the ratings used by doctors and personal trainers. Your body mass index is a simple formula with your height and weight to determine if you are normal weight, overweight, obese, or extremely obese. Good nutrition is a part of every athletes regimen and is key for supplying the right nutrients and recovery.
Begin a program of losing weight and building athleticism. It is easy when you do a little every day. The body doesn’t change quickly although relatively speaking, you could feel big improvement in a month. For a better guide see my books Every Body Can Surf or Get Fit to Surf.
